Number of ultrasound illegal?

I am 12 weeks pregnant and I bought a fetal doppler quality Medical LCD to say BPM. The first time I used it constantly and I hear of 165 heart beats strong and clear. But these days, I tried and tried and can not pick up the heart rate up. I'm going nowhere numbers 80-180 and I can hear static, not a steady beat as strong as before. Why only receive 1 Doppler reading this? Whats up with odd numbers?
